5+1 Agree on a Third Resolution against Iran

On Friday Sep. 28 the five permanent members of the Security Council and Germany and European Union foreign policy Chief in a joint statement announced : “The proliferation risks of the Iranian nuclear program remain a source of serious concern to the international community.”
the statement added: Since Iran has not suspended its enrichment and reprocessing activities as required under the two previous Security Council resolutions, the six nations said “we agree to finalize a text for a third U.N. Security Council sanctions resolution … on the bases of article 41 of seventh UN charter, with the intention of bringing it to a vote in the U.N. Security Council unless the November reports of Dr. Solana and Dr. ElBaradei show a positive outcome of their efforts.”
The US and European ministers met separately to weigh additional non-UN sanctions against Iran for its refusal to suspend its uranium enrichment program.
US Under Secretary of State for political affairs Nicholas Burns described Friday’s talks as “very good”… and underlined the necessity of international community’s firm commitment against Iranian nuclear ambitions.
“There have been questions the Russians have raised, or the Chinese have raised particularly, on the timing of moving forward with a sanctions resolution,” State Department spokesman Sean McCormack said Thursday.
“We think the Security Council should move forward with a sanctions resolution. Now,” he added.
