Six powers to hold talks Wednesday on Iran nuclear program

AFP, Aug 5, 2008 (excerpts) – The six world powers involved in talks on Iran’s nuclear program will hold a conference call Wednesday to decide their next step, after Tehran failed give a final answer to an incentives package, a US State Department spokesman said Tuesday.
“If we are not going to receive a clear response, a clear message from them, we are going to have no choice but to pursue additional measures,” spokesman Gonzalo Gallegos said.
Negotiators from United States, Britain, France, Germany, Russia and China “have scheduled a conference call for tomorrow,” the spokesman said.
“So first we will see what happens with the rest of the day that is left in Europe, and then they will have their call tomorrow. We will see where we go from there.”

The British Foreign Office said: Iran faces new UN sanctions unless it gives a response by Tuesday to an offer of incentives to freeze uranium enrichment operations,.
“We will be disappointed if there (is) no response to the E3 proposals by tomorrow… We will have no choice but to ask the UN to proceed with further sanctions,” a spokesman said Monday, referring to proposals put to Tehran by three European countries — Britain, France and Germany.

The comments came after EU foreign policy chief Javier Solana held what a spokesman described as “inconclusive” talks with Iran’s top nuclear negotiator, after Tehran missed a deadline to respond to the compromise offer.
