
“The release of nearly 400 thousand secret US documents on the war in Iraq has caused a storm,” Russia TV reported on the recent WikiLeaks revelation. “This issue has caused anger in Baghdad.”
The Russia TV reporter asked a Guardian journalist, “Do you think that Prime Minister Nouri Maliki is truly worried about the fragile stability in Iraq, or is he rather more worried about his own political future?”
Martin Chulov of the Guardian told Russia TV: “I believe the second is true. I think these allegations are very serious and harming for him, especially at a time that Mr. Maliki tries to portray himself as a man of the people. The main issue in the allegations against him was that Anti-Terrorism Units who answer to him personally were dispatched to spread propaganda for him amongst the society. This was in violation of Iraqi laws, whatever they may have been at that time. Some say that he used his authority to carry out his sectarian goals. As a result, he truly has something to think about, something to fear of being disclosed amongst the people who are reluctant to return him to power…”
