Palestine President Mahmoud Abbas issued a statement strongly condemning the Israeli ground attack against the Gaza Strip and demanded an urgent stop of Israel’s attacks and implementing a ceasefire plan proposed by Egypt.
President Abbas in a press conference in Cairo condemned Israel’s ground assault to the Gaza Strip and said, “This measure only complicates the status quo and causes more bloodshed.” He called on Israel to refrain from continuing this attack and emphasized the ceasefire initiative proposed by Egypt was at the request of the Palestinian Authority. Based on this plan a ceasefire would be imposed within 24 hours and talks would start afterwards.
President Abbas also met with Egyptian President Mahmoud Abbas discussing the latest developments in Gaza and other Palestinian areas. In the joint statement issued after this meeting both leaders emphasized on the necessity of urgently stopping this war to save more blood, and relying on a 2012 Egypt plan for a ceasefire and its articles.
In this meeting President Abbas also underscored the need for actions based on the Palestinian people’s request to build up international support so the two countries of Palestine and Israel can live peacefully next to each other based on borders agreed to back in 1967.
