Iran was the party that brought the terrorist group Islamic State of Iraq and Syria to this country and there is no doubt about this, said former Syrian Vice President Abdul-Halim Khaddam in an interview with Asharq al-Awsat daily on June 4th.
“Iran is a main part of the war in Syria. The Shiite Islam organization, Revolutionary Guards and Hezbollah are in Syria, all fighting alongside the Assad regime because the overthrow of Bashar Assad will be a heavy blow to all of Iranian regime,” he added.
“If the Assad regime falls, Iran’s campaign in Iraq will come to an end, and Hezbollah’s role in Lebanon – if not destroyed – will be very weakened. As a result, the role of Iran’s militants and the impact of its proxies in the region will decrease, and if this actually takes place we will witness decreasing Iranian influence in the region. Therefore, it is desperately trying to support the Assad regime with weapons, logistics and forces,” the 82-year old Khadam added.
At a time he was Syria’s number two man and now he is an opponent living in exile in Paris.
