The people of Iraq protested the cancelation of food rationing, expressing their anger and antipathy towards such a measure adopted by the Maliki government. These demonstrations were held in the cities of Baghdad, Basra and Ramadi. Demonstrators in Baghdad held placards that wrote “cancelling food rationing is a bullet in the heart of Iraqi citizens”. According to a report by Al-Sharqiya TV, security forces prevented the demonstrators from reaching Baghdad’s Tahrer and Ferdous squares. In Ramadi, demonstrators took to the streets calling on the government to revoke the law. Protesters said that such a decision by the Maliki government is tyrannous, placing a heavy burden on the shoulders of citizens, especially the poor.
In continuation of its report titled exposing the transcript of Iraq’s council of ministers meeting regarding the cancelation of food rationing, Al-Sharqiya said: following the cancellation of food rationing by the Iraqi government and the revelation of the meeting’s transcript, security forces have taken tough measures to prevent popular protests and demonstrations in various cities.
