Monsoon floods have left a trail of devastation in southern Asia. In Myanmar heavy rains have destroyed farm lands and blocked roads, leaving people stranded. Dozens have been killed over the past month. Dramatic video shows parked cars falling into a river in China when a heavy downpour hit. Miraculously no one was hurt.
A grim situation in India is developing as raging floodwaters have killed at least 178 people. The United Nations warned it could be days until the true scope of the devastation emerges. Floodwaters have risen very high while rains continue to fall especially in eastern India. There are infrastructural issues across the country, making circumstances much tougher for the people impacted by the floods. Indian officials are saying 10 million people are currently affected.

This photograph shows the devastation of flood in states of West Bengal and Odisha being the worst affected areas after a cyclone hit the region over the course of the weekend. Many of the dams in West Bengal in particular have been overflowing, leading to a number of villages being overwhelmed.
On the western side of India, in the states of Rajasthan and Gujarat a number of deaths have been reported, but those are from regular monsoon rains. It is worth noting that monsoon rains in India come every year between the months of July and September. It is not unusual to have this amount of rainfall or deaths from flood-related losses as India suffers around 1,600 such cases every year.
Phone lines and electricity are down, and in some areas sewages have been reported overflowing. The larger problem in India is infrastructure and people often say rainwater doesn’t kill and floods don’t necessary take many casualties. But when infrastructure starts crumbling the death tolls begin to rise significantly. Buildings, bridges and walls are seen collapsing in flood-stricken parts of India. That is where people are dying and death tolls are rising. India is a very poor country despite the fact that its economy is rising. Across its vast lands much of the infrastructure are in very poor conditions and that is the main reason behind the high number of deaths every year.
