EU Calls for Stop to Executions in Iran

Kuwait News Agency, Brussels, August 12, 2008 — The European Union expressed Tuesday “deep concern” by reports that Amir Amrollahi, sentenced to death for crimes committed when he was a minor, is shortly to be executed in Iran. “This death sentence flagrantly contravenes the international obligations and commitments of the Islamic Republic of Iran,” said the 27-member European bloc in a statement.

The EU also condemned the execution on 22 July of Hassan Mozafari and Rahman Shahidi, who were minors at the time of the acts for which they were convicted.

The statement urged Iran to take without delay the steps necessary to bring about a stay of execution in the case of Amir Amrollahi and in general of all other persons facing the death penalty for acts committed when they were minors.
