Following the increasing number of countries recognizing the Syrian opposition and the battles reaching Damascus, the condition in Syria remains dark and somewhat confusing, Al-Sbah daily of Palestine wrote.
After Khamenei’s hideous remarks on the necessity of supporting the Assad regime and preventing his overthrow, these conditions need a new mechanism.
Iran continues to support Assad because it understands the fall of Damascus means the beginning of the end for itself. The international community can take action but initiatives such as inspecting Iranian planes in Baghdad airport will not succeed, especially since reports indicate Iraq is actually collaborating with Iran on these measures. Maliki’s government is fundamentally associated to Iran. The only effective mechanism on this issue relies on two pillars:
1. Imposing heavy pressure on Maliki’s government and forcing it to take a strong stance against Iran to not use Iraqi soil or airspace. Better than this would be to support Iraqi political forces in taking action and setting Maliki aside.
2. Recognizing the Iranian Resistance by the international community as the legitimate representative of the Iranian people and opposition, and the adequate alternative of this bloodthirsty regime. The National Council of Resistance of Iran led by Maryam Rajavi was able to impose the European Union and the United States to revoke the name of the People’s Mojahedin Organization of Iran from their terrorist lists.
Recognizing the Iranian Resistance, along with heavy and effective pressure and a practical political mechanism on Maliki to not follow the mullahs’ orders, are two elements that can finalize the situation in Syria and accelerate Assad’s downfall for today, not tomorrow.
