Iraqiya Coalition leaders issued a letter on Saturday to UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon demanding the transfer of Ashraf residents to Liberty be stopped until reasons that they describe as catastrophic in Camp Liberty are reviewed and practical assurances based on respect for residents’ rights are provided for.
Iraqiya Coalition Spokesman Heidar al-Mulla issued a statement announcing Iraqiya Coalition leaders, citing international humanitarian laws and UNSG remarks and emphasis, and the international community’s concerns regarding the fate of Ashraf residents, delivered a letter to the UN Secretary General expressing serious concerns regarding inhumane conditions at Camp Liberty. They also voiced concerns on this camp being turned into a prison for Ashraf residents, describing the conditions in complete contrast to the nearly perfect images that was presented earlier. They stressed Liberty lacks the necessary infrastructure and is far from humanitarian minimums.
The Iraqiya Coalition warned “the rights of these innocent human beings must not be subject to political considerations and incentives to the Iranian regime, and the transfer to Liberty – which is virtually a prison – must stop until a full analysis of the atrocious conditions takes place and all errors are resolved. Furthermore, reporters and independent delegations must be allowed to inspect the conditions of these residents.”
