Akram al-Naqib, lawyer and President of the Iraqiya Coalition Legal Committee said the three parties involved (US, UN and EU) have a responsibility following the transfer of Ashraf residents to Liberty to provide a safe haven for them.
“The UN is obligated to follow up on the precise implementation of the articles of the year-end agreement signed with the Iraqi government,” al-Naqib said. “We demand the implementation of the agreement articles in an accurate fashion, especially by the Iraqi government because disruption in the full execution of these articles will have negative reflections on this government.”
Akram al-Naqib called for Ashraf residents’ relocation and their settlement in Liberty to be placed under international and UN supervision and for minimum services – similar to those in Camp Ashraf – be provided for.
“We had also demanded the new location to not be equipped in a manner for it to resemble a prison and detention center,” she added, “the arrangement of this location before Ashraf residents’ transfer to be carried out under international supervision, and for the specifications and standards to be based on residential areas proper for a dignified life.”
