Arab and Iraqi activists, jurists call for respect of Ashraf and Liberty residents’ rights

Human rights activists, jurists and lawyers from Iraq and numerous Arab countries have issued statements calling for respect towards the rights of Ashraf and Liberty residents.

International Organization of Defense of Human Rights and Democracy in Iraq
The Iraqi government during the past seven months has attempted to rob Ashraf residents of their belongings and continuously blocks their measures aimed at practicing their right to sell or transfer their property.
Seizing Ashraf residents’ properties is a blatant account of theft, in violation of Iraqi and international laws and in contrast to fundamental humanitarian principles. It is necessary the Iraqi government be forced to provide facilitations in order to sell Ashraf residents’ properties in Iraq and outside the country, and also to transfer necessary items to Camp Liberty.

Arab Lawyers Delegation in Defense of Liberty Residents
The Iraqi government’s measures that deny Ashraf residents of their rights to sell their properties inside or outside Iraq are considered cruel acts. Their goal is to use force to deprive Ashraf residents of their authority over their moveable and immovable assets.
We call on the UN Secretary-General and US government to carry out necessary measures in order to impose the Iraqi government to respect Ashraf residents’ rights.

American-Iraqi Organization for Human Rights
The Iraqi government stonewalls the sale of Ashraf residents’ properties or their transfer to another country, and transfer to their owners inside Iraq. To this day, neither UNAMI nor the UNHCR have found a reasonable solution for the status of the residents’ assets, a plan in which the rights of Ashraf residents – deprived by force – is respected.
It is necessary for the US government and UN to force Iraq to carry out its commitments towards the residents.

Statement – Arab Women Lawyers in Defense of 1,000 Ashraf women
While international and legal calls have increased for Ashraf residents’ rights to be recognized for the sale of their assets, the measures of the Iraqi government – taking place under the supervision of Martin Kobler – represent violations of the residents’ rights of ownership, with their assets valued at over $500 million.
We call on international organizations, the UN, Iraqi Parliament and representatives of foreign embassies in Iraq to support the rights of Ashraf and Liberty residents.
Ashraf residents’ right to ownership over their assets is in line with international laws and recognized rights for all political refugees.
