In an interview with al-Arabiya TV, Iraqi Vice President Dr. Tareq al-Hashemi said Iran, with Maliki’s support, provides arms to the Assad regime. Iran transfers weapons to Syria not only through Iraq’s airspace, but also through Iraq’s roads using heavy transport machinery.
“Heavy trucks specially designed to transport weapons first enter Iraq from Iran. Then without undergoing any inspections, they enter Syrian soil through the Ben Valid border region and the arms are delivered to the Assad regime,” al-Hashemi explained.
“The Iraqi government doesn’t inspect the Iranian planes carrying weapons for Assad. It only inspects planes carrying medicine and food stuffs,” the Iraqi Vice President added.
“My political relationship with Maliki has led to a complete political discharge, and I no longer wish to repeat the bitter and failed political experiences of the past years with this individual,” he explained.
“The Syrian revolution and the changes taking place in this country can be a true example for changes in Iraq. The Syrian revolution is the attempt of a nation struggling for a dignified life, freedom and happiness. Nouri Maliki from 2006 to this day, through very serious mistakes, cruel measures and unprecedented administrative corruption has led Iraq to a complete dead-end and the people of this country can no longer wait,” al-Hashemi added.
