UN High Commissioner for Human Rights Navi Pillay opened the 26th annual UN Human Rights Council session by criticizing Iran on the high number of executions.
“I also deplore the fact that since January of this year Iran has already executed more than 200 individuals, most for drug crimes that do not meet the threshold of most serious crimes under International Human Rights Law,” she said.
It is worth noting this is the last session Pillay is residing as High Commissioner.
Zeid Ra’ad al-Hossein of the Jordanian monarchial family has been announced by the UN Secretary-General to replace Pillay.
The 26th annual session of the UN Human Rights Council was launched on Tuesday, June 10th, in Geneva and continuing to June 27th.
