New York Daily News, Washington, 12 August 2015 — Sen. Chuck Schumer kept up his spat with President Obama over Iran Tuesday, rejecting the administration’s argument that tossing out the nuclear pact with the regime will lead to military action.
“The alternative is not war,” Schumer said. “I’d be very much opposed to war. It is to go back to the bargaining table and come to a better agreement,” Schumer said in a Manhattan event Tuesday.
But Schumer addressed the issue Tuesday for the second time in two days, directly challenging Secretary of State Kerry’s claim that new talks aren’t possible if Congress blocks the deal. A vote is expected in September.
“U.S. sanctions, which will stay in place absolutely if we don’t have an agreement, along with pressure on other countries to keep Iran isolated, can force Iran back to the table,” Schumer claimed.
Schumer on Tuesday faulted the deal’s terms for surprise inspections of suspicious sites.
Iran could delay such inspections for up to 24 days.
Even if Iran can’t hide signs of fissile material, “there are parts to bombmaking that don’t involve nuclear isotopes, how to make the bomb in terms of detonators and things like that,” Schumer said.
“We’ll never be able to discover those in a nondesignated site,” he said.
“This is a vote of conscience,” he said Tuesday. “It was a vote of conscience for me, it will be a vote of conscience for my colleagues.”
