Rafsanjani’s son was forced to return to Iran after facing prosecution by the Canadian government and the threat of being arrested in London, the Revolutionary Guards-affiliated Fars news agency revealed.
He was forced to choose the bad option between the bad and worst options before him, Fars added.
An individual by the name of Hooshang Hoozari, currently holding Canadian citizenship, filed a complaint at a Canadian court in 2005 against Mehdi Hashemi on the signing of a large oil contract with Iran, Fars continued.
Mehdi Hashemi, an oil director at the time, had asked Hoozari to pay $50 million dollars to have this oil contract signed and carried out, and since the individual refused to pay this money, he was kidnapped during a trip to Tehran and after 8 months of detention realized there is no contract at all. A company belonging to Mehdi Hashemi had signed the contract under his own name.
The Canadian court condemned Mehdi Hashemi to pay $13 million and this is why Mehdi Hashemi decided to return to Iran despite already having a judicial case in Iran, preferring apprehension in Tehran than London.
