The following is an excerpt of a text written by political prisoner Ja’far Eghdami in commemoration of the July 9th, 1999 student uprisings anniversary. Eghdami was arrested on this day 12 years ago, and placed under physical and psychological torture as a result.
“July 9th, 1999 reminds us of dark and very harsh days that will never be forgotten from the Iranian nation’s history. I was 21 years old and a student of Azad University. I was arrested for taking part in a peaceful popular demonstration which was held for the sole reason of demanding justice for the perpetrators of the attack on Tehran University campus. I was transferred to the former al-Ghadir Park police station and later to Evin Prison where I was placed under physical and psychological torture.”
