In a shocking crime in Shahr-e Kord Prison in southwest Iran, 12 defenseless inmates lost their lives in a horrific and widespread fire at this facility. State-run media have reported these inmates lost their lives after suffocating from the fumes.
This fire erupted after a number of prisoners went on strike protesting the prisons’ inhumane conditions and other prisoners burned their clothes and mattresses in support of the hunger striking inmates.
The Shahr-e Kord Prison warden decided to punish the hunger strikers and prison authorities had locked the main doors of the prison and prevented aid to the inmates. This led to at least 12 inmates losing their lives.
