
UP to August of this year 157 women are behind bars in Iran for unpremeditated crimes, showing a two-fold increase in this regard, an Iranian official said.
“According to the latest statistics up to mid-August of this year all women in prison across the country counted to 79. Unfortunately, these numbers have witnessed a two-fold increase,” Assadollah Jolaie added.
85% of the women in jail are due to financial charges, he added and going on to say 20 women in Tehran Province are in jail.
“In this regard the provinces of Tehran and Fars, with 18 and 16 female prisoners, respectively, have the highest number of women in prison for unpremeditated charges,” he said.
