On March 30, 1912, Tsar forces led by colonel Rokov entered Iran and fired at the Imam Reza shrine with artillery; as a result the minarets and the entrance of the shrine were destroyed and the treasure house was looted. Some 200 people were killed in the shelling. Aiming to overthrow constitutionalism, Russian soldiers assaulted a number of northern Iranian cities.
