On February 26, 1848, French revolution created the Second Republic. Following the defeat of the First Republic and establishment of Napoleon’s emperorship in 1804, France underwent a 44 year of monarchy rule.
Struggle for reforms led to a revolution in 1848 and resignation of Louis Philip. Eleven leading members of Republic party took control of the government and an interim administration presided by Alphonse de Lamartine, renowned French poet, was established. The interim government proclaimed republic rule in France and ordered elections for Constitutional Assembly. In the 1848 elections, Louis Napoleon, Napoleon’s cousin, was elected as the president of France.
