On August 13, 1961, construction of Berlin Wall which was later named as Iron Wall was started. This wall divided Berlin, half of which belonged to East Germany and half to West Germany.
Since the official separation of two Germanys in 1949, dissidents of East Germany used to escape to the Western part. In 1961, the East Germany government decided to make a wall to prevent these escapes.
Following the collapse of the Eastern Block and union of the two Germanys, Berlin Wall was demolished.
