In response to Khamenei’s Friday speech, Egyptians are saying they do not want an Islamic republic similar to Iran, BBC World News reported.
Report: Thousand have gathered in Cairo’s Tahrir Square. At the same time, Iran’s religious leader Khamenei described Egypt as the region’s “Islamic awareness”. Khamenei called on the Egyptian people to establish an Islamic republic in Egypt.
BBC World’s analyst in Washington said the US government has not responded to Khamenei’s speech. However, according to news from Cairo and Arab TV stations in the region, the Egyptians’ response to Khamenei’s speech has been extremely negative. The Egyptian people are saying we do not want to be like Iran. We do not want an Islamic revolution. Our uprising was not for this cause. The purpose of this uprising is for a better life, employment and higher wages, and not to establish an Islamic republic. This uprising is in no way comparable to Iran’s Islamic revolution. However, due to the fact that events are shaking on a very fast pace, there is always this concern that Egypt is heading into darkness and unknown territories.
US officials are saying this uprising is more similar to the German people’s uprising in 1989 when the Berlin Wall fell. US officials do not believe Egypt’s uprising will go down the path of Iran’s Islamic revolution.
