US State Department spokeswoman Jen Psaki shed light on Washington’s position on Iraq’s recent elections and said considering the challenges Iraq is facing, US’ focus is on encouraging the new government and its leaders to unite the country through forming a new government that is supported by all of Iraq’s societies and is willing to bring about practical advances. It is clear that this depends on the Iraqi people to determine their leaders and involves a process that must be followed up on the ground, she added.
The US expects Iraqi political alliances to now enter negotiations to determine the next Iraqi government, Psaki explained, adding Washington believes it is necessary for the next government leaders to be able to gain the support of all societies in the country and unite all of Iraq.
