The White House and the Pentagon confirmed that General John Allen, former commander of NATO forces in Afghanistan and former commander of US forces in Anbar Province of Iraq, has been appointed as the leader of the coalition against ISIL.
General John Allen has experience working with Sunni tribes in the fight against al-Qaeda.
