NEW YORK – The United Nations has called for urgent action to help people in Syria, as media reports said that thousands of Syrian children are starving in areas out of reach of aid workers.
In a statement, human rights Chief Zeid Ra’ad Al Hussain said the latest reports are coming in from Aleppo, Homs, Damascus and Rural Damascus, Idleb and Deir ez-Zour of mounting civilian casualties.
He said civilians remain trapped in besieged villages, towns and cities across Syria and many people are at risk of starvation and have no access to adequate medical care.
The UN human rights chief also urged the international community to address the terrible suffering of the Syrian people.
UAE denounces targeting of civilians
The United Arab Emirates has expressed deep concern at the upsurge in attacks on civilians in Syria, especially in the city of Aleppo.
It described the targeting by the government forces of hospitals and essential medical services meant for the population languishing under siege and facing extremely difficult inhumane conditions as “immoral”.
It also urged the UN Security Council to shoulder its responsibilities and the need to spare the lives of Syrian civilians who are being subjected to fierce attacks as a result of the continued fighting and the determination to resolve matters militarily.
The UAE also called on the UN Security Council to urge the Syrian government to abide by the ceasefire and facilitate the entry of humanitarian aid to the besieged areas.
