Deadly floods are stretching over vast areas of South Asia. Amongst the latest victims are 27 people who have been killed in a twin train derailment. In India flood waters swept two trains off their tracks. These accidents happened just minutes apart. A rescue operation is currently under way and across the country some 200 people have died in this time of extreme weather. Hundreds of thousands have been forced from their homes and they are now seeking refuge in temporary relief camps.
Two separate trains were crisscrossing India and as soon as one was derailed the other suffered the same fate coming from the opposite direction. Survivors said it all happened very quickly and the Railway Ministry says the driver could not have done much in those circumstances because it was pitch black and they didn’t have much time to stop. The death toll of this incident currently stands at 27 while dozens of people have been seriously injured. The Indian Army has been involved and after rescuing many people officials are saying they don’t expect the death toll to rise much further.
