Syria’s longstanding history of embracing refugees

Orient Net, 30 June 2017—  After 1915, Syria received the largest share of the displaced Armenians and allocated them into the land offering them work and housing.

The city of Aleppo at that time also announced a full readiness to accept an infinite number of displaced Armenians.

In 1920s, the citizens of Aleppo willingly assisted in building neighborhoods for the refugees and rejected any government aid for doing so. They argued that taking any assistance from governments or churches would be a disgrace they could not accept.

Religious scholars of Damascus and Aleppo issued statements stating that Syrians were obliged to help every refugee who sought asylum in Syrian territory whatever his religion or belief might be. They also emphasized the need to ensure that all refugees be allowed to work in order to provide themselves and their families with the necessities for living a good life.

Armenians became an important part of Syrian society and Syrian Armenians have long been considered Syrian citizens.

The Armenian neighborhoods that were formed in the 1920s still exist today even though many have left Syria due to efforts to repatriate Armenia and as a result of fleeing the violence in recent years.

But for more than nine decades, Armenian craftsmen helped to establish a reputation for famous workmanship and expertise in the city of Aleppo.
