Syria: Obama urges resumption of peace talks and reinstatement of ceasefire

HANOVER – US President Barack Obama made a plea on Sunday for warring parties in Syria to return to peace talks and “reinstate” a ceasefire.
“I spoke to (Russian) President Vladimir Putin early last week to try to make sure that we could reinstate the cessation of hostilities,” he told a news conference in Germany, as an increasingly troubled ceasefire was threatened by regime and rebel bombardments that claimed 26 lives Sunday.
President Obama said he is “deeply concerned” about a recent increase in violence in Syria and that he continues to believe in the need for a political solution inside the country.
“We remain deeply concerned about the upsurge in fighting in Syria over the last several days, and we continue to agree that the only real durable solution is a political solution that moves Syria towards an inclusive government that represents all Syrians,” Obama said at a news conference alongside German chancellor Angela Merkel.
