Switzerland train attack: Two die after man sets carriage alight, attacks passengers with knife

Switzerland- Reuters-Agu16 2016- At about 2:20pm (local time) on Saturday a 27-year-old Swiss national used flammable liquid to start a fire on a moving train in eastern Switzerland before attacking passengers.

Seven people, including the suspected attacker, were admitted to hospital.
A man who carried out a stabbing and arson attack on a Swiss train, killing one and injuring five others, has died in hospital, police say.

Five people were stabbed or suffered burns during the attack, which occurred as the train neared Salez station in St Gallen.
One 34-year-old woman died and two girls were in serious condition a day after the attack.
The suspect also died from his injuries on Sunday, St Gallen police said.

The motive was not immediately clear, but the incident follows a string of violent, often deadly assaults in Europe in recent months, with many claimed by the jihadist Islamic State group.
“The question of motive remains,” police from Switzerland’s eastern Saint Gallen region said in a statement.

“To date there is no indication this was a terrorist or politically motivated act.”
Police spokesman Bruno Metzger said that “terrorism is not our main theory” and that “other motives” figured far higher on the list, although he would not say what they were.
Mr Kruesi did not comment on whether the attacker’s religious affiliation was known to police, who on Saturday evening (local time) searched his home.

Workers clean the platform after the bloody incident.
Mr Kruesi denied reports that the man had targeted one specific woman on the train, dousing her with the flammable liquid.

“That is not correct. This was not directed concretely at one person,” he said, adding that it remained unclear whether the attacker knew any of his victims.
