AFP, Washington, April 13, 2010 – French President Nicolas Sarkozy said Tuesday he wanted the United Nations to impose fresh sanctions on Iran over its nuclear program no later than May.
The United Nations should agree on sanctions ’in April or May, no later,’ Sarkozy told a news conference at a nuclear summit in Washington.
’The moment of truth is nearing,’ Sarkozy said.
The French leader was in Washington for a 47-nation summit on nuclear security, where Iran’s nuclear program was a top item of discussion on the sidelines.
France and the United States have been the chief supporters of imposing tighter sanctions on Iran over suspicions it is building a nuclear bomb.
The clerical regime contends that it is only developing a nuclear program for civilian energy.
