Considering the fact that the Iraqi Parliament approves bills at a snail’s pace, the speedy confirmation of Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi’s reforms was very surprising and shocking. The pressure imposed on the Parliament by the demonstrators was very effective.
Thousands upon thousands of people poured into the streets during the past few weeks. They intend to come again next Friday. MPs not only confirmed al-Abadi’s reforms, they also approved a 16-point plan presented by the parliament speaker. Therefore, it appears that all these developments are a major victory for the Iraqi people and their demands. Reforms are entering the stage of being implemented and this is where all the problems must be resolved.
