Obama, Putin Meet on Sidelines of G-20 Summit in China’s Hangzhou

HANGZHOU, China—U.S. President Barack Obama and Russian President Vladimir Putin met Monday after talks between their senior officials to reduce violence in Syria ended without an agreement.

Messrs. Obama and Putin were expected to discuss Syria, as well as Russia’s intervention in Ukraine.

Their discussion, which wasn’t a formal meeting, took place on the sidelines of the Group of 20 summit. It was their first face-to-face meeting in nearly a year.
U.S. Secretary of State John Kerry and Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov held talks on Syria for hours over the past two days, but they were unable to resolve final differences on a plan. An agreement would include greater military cooperation in Syria between the U.S. and Russia in exchange for a cease-fire to provide humanitarian relief.
