‘Nur al-Sharif’, most famous Arab actor passes away

The Arab world lost a significant cultural figure, popular artist and a great friend of the people on Wednesday, August 12th. Mohamed Jaber Mohamed Abdullah, who picked the name of Nur al-Sharif for his role as an actor, was born in Cairo and had played in 170 movies and numerous TV serials.
Arab media have remembered him very kindly as he was an artist who always maintained his progressive positions regarding issues of the Arab world, justice and supporting freedom.
Nur al-Sharif was born in Cairo’s al-Seyede Zeinab district in 1946. He loved football (soccer) but chose acting as a profession and graduated in stage art in 1967.
Egyptian Culture Minister Abdulvahed al-Nabavi described the loss of Nur al-Sharif as a major loss for Arab art.
“His presence in the world of art made him a star in this field of work,” he said.
He was the producer of many movies, including “The Last Respectful Man” and “Naji al-Ali”.
“Cairo Time”, directed by Amir Ramsis was the last film Nur al-Sharif played in. For his role in this film he received an award for best actor in Arab films during the Vahran International Film Festival back in June.
