Al Arabiya.net, 8 December 2016 – US Secretary of State John Kerry’s meeting with his Russian counterpart Sergei Lavrov in Hamburg on Wednesday did not witness any breakthroughs regarding the situation in Syria’s Aleppo.
According to sources, Lavrov did not seem concerned in reaching an agreement while the Syrian regime forces advance in the neighborhoods of eastern Aleppo.
Moscow also still adheres to its conditions regarding the evacuation of civilians and opposition fighters from eastern Aleppo.
Kerry said they exchanged ideas about the difficult situation in Aleppo which he described as ‘disastrous’, adding that he will meet again with Lavrov on Thursday.
Meanwhile, the UN voiced its support of all efforts that end violence in Aleppo. This comes after six western countries, including the US and France, called for a ceasefire and for avoiding a humanitarian catastrophe in Aleppo.
