The United States expects agreement in the next few weeks on a resolution imposing new U.N. sanctions on Iran for its refusal to suspend uranium enrichment and rein in its nuclear program، U.S. Ambassador Zalmay Khalilzad said Thursday, according to a report by Associated Press.
Khalilzad said the United States views the issue of Iran’s nuclear activities as ’one of the most important issues facing the world’ and wants new sanctions to step up pressure on Iran and ’increase its incentive to cooperate with the international community.’
’But Iran having industrial-level enrichment of its own، given the record of this regime in particular، is too risky،’ Khalilzad said.
Speaking of Iranian President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad، the U.S. envoy said، ’That will bring him very close on nuclear weapons capability، that’s too dangerous for the world to accept.’
Khalilzad said the United States is still in a ’diplomatic phase،’ but there have been rumblings in the U.S. of possible military action against Iran if the nuclear dispute is not resolved.
