
The Iraqi people’s demonstrations on Friday, September 9th, engulfed cities throughout the country with protesters chanting Arab Spring slogans calling for Maliki’s overthrow. Rallies took place from Baghdad’s Tahrir Square to 14 other cities from north to the south.
Despite various repressive measures by Maliki’s forces, the Iraqi people staged demonstrations in their 30th consecutive week in the cities of Baghdad, Abu Ghoreib, Mosul, Tal-Afar, Samera, Ramadi, Faluja, Hella, Kirkuk, Basra, Nasseriya, Diwaniya, Kut, Karbala and Najaf. The demonstrators chanted anti-government slogans against Maliki and demanded the Iranian regime to be evicted from their country.
The demonstrators taking part in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square were high in numbers and the women had a significant presence, al-Rafidain TV reported. Despite severe security measures by Maliki, the demonstrators chanted for his government to be brought down.
In Mosul, a large crowd took part in a demonstration in this city. The people’s presence in this demonstration took place while security forces had announced for people to stay in their homes and they had cancelled the routine weekly Friday prayers.
Based on a report aired by al-Sharqiya TV, a large demonstration took place in Baghdad’s Tahrir Square. The demonstrators condemned the assassination of journalist Hadi al-Mahdi who had called for demonstrations. The protesters also condemned the Iranian regime’s acts of aggressions against the Iraqi people and demanded measures to be taken to bring an end to these aggressions.
