Iraqi MP expresses concerns on arms deal with Russia

Iraqi MP Shuwan Mohammad Taha, a member of the Iraqi Parliament Security and Defense Commission, said Point 4 of Article 61 of Iraq’s constitution on policies of procuring military weaponry are clear, stating international agreements and covenants must be referred to the Parliament and approved with one third of members’ votes.
The Security and Defense Commission has not approved any arms agreement or deal and this is blatantly against the constitution, he said in his remarks.
He expressed concerns on the fact that Russia and the Czech Republic have placed no conditions on selling these weapons, while the EU and the US stress weapons should not be used inside the country, and weapons must have a defensive nature, not offensive.
Purchasing weapons to fight terrorism is rejected because weapons to fight terrorism are light and very sensitive, not planes and cannons, this Iraqi MP explained.
