Iraqi Prime Minister Dr. Haider al-Abadi has opened a portion of the heavily fortified “Green Zone” in Baghdad to free traffic passage, al-Tagheer TV reported. Former prime minister and ousted vice president Nouri al-Maliki had closed these areas with numerous checkpoints. Prime Minister al-Abadi opened these areas according to the people’s demands for better commuting.
“Opening this area is in response to the people’s demands to facilitate their commuting and a step promised by Dr. Haider al-Abadi,” the Iraqi Prime Ministry Office statement reads.
“After ten years the most important avenues of the capital that were closed are now open and the Iraqi Prime Minister welcomed the first vehicles of the public during their entrance into the Green Zone,” al-Iraqiya TV reported.
