Iranian artillery fire kills 1 in Iraq’s north

AP, Baghdad, Iraq May 30, 2010  – An Iraqi border official says Iranian artillery fire in Iraq’s Kurdish north has killed a 14-year-old girl and wounded three other villagers.

Border guard Capt. Kamiran Jalal said Sunday the Iranian artillery targeted villages in the Balakiyaki border area in Irbil province.

He says the barrage began the previous night and forced 30 families to flee their homes. Jalal identified the girl killed as BasourzJabbar.

Iran has previously targeted the border areas in pursuit of a Kurdish rebel group known as the Party for Free Life in Kurdistan, or PEJAK.

The mountainous Iran-Iraq border region has been the scene of sporadic clashes between PEJAK fighters and Iranian forces in recent years.

There was no immediate comment from Iranian officials.
