Iran Opposition group says Iran working on nuclear warheads

WashingtonTV, Washington, September 24, 2009 – An exiled Iranian Opposition group said on Thursday that it had identified two previously unknown sites in Iran that are being used to build nuclear warheads.

The Paris-based National Council of Resistance of Iran [NCRI] said the sites belonged to a unit liked to Iran’s Ministry of Defense, called “Research Center for the Technology of Explosion and Impact”, known as METFAZ.

The NCRI’s information could not be verified, reports Reuters.

The Opposition group was the first to reveal Iran’s exposed uranium enrichment research in 2002, which had been hidden from the International Atomic Energy Agency [IAEA].

Mehdi Abrishamchi, a senior NCRI official, told reporters in Paris today that his organization had passed the information on the alleged warhead plants to the IAEA, reports AFP.

“They are places for research and production of detonation systems,” he said in a news conference.

The information had come from the group’s sources in Iran, Abrishamchi said.

At one of the alleged sites, in eastern Tehran, computer simulations on penetration and impact were carried out, he said.

Another location, in the village of Sanjarian, some 30 kilometers to the east of Tehran, was the venue for the manufacture of components used in the detonation systems, he added.

Iran strongly rejects Western accusations that it is seeking nuclear arms.
