Iraqi Parliament Speaker Osama al-Nujaifi said there must be an obligation to the constitution, democracy, transfer of power, supporting the weak, investigations in prisons and the Army not intervening in politics because all these issues threaten the country and we must stand before these measures, al-Taqeer TV reported.
“From now on, silence is not allowed and the country is facing its most dangerous challenge to this date,” he added.
“Right now, Maliki’s government has positions including their argument that the Parliament has no legislative right, meaning this government intends to stop all legal work. They also claim the Parliament has no right to supervise, has no immunity, or a Member of Parliament only has immunity inside the Parliament building and when he leaves the facility he can be arrested… These are demarches aimed at destroying democracy in Iraq and this is very dangerous,” he added.
“I hail the demonstrators and place my hand in their hands, and I tell them to fight for your legitimate demands… the country’s future will be determined by the say of the people, and the government must accept this and execute any legal demand… the people’s current demands are true and legal demands, and they are based on their firm rights. This is what we are obligated to in the political trend,” al-Nujaifi continued.
