Heavy Fighting Hits Syrian Capital

VOA News, 6 Feb 2013 – Activists say heavy fighting has erupted in the Syrian capital, with clashes between rebels and government forces in several districts of Damascus.

Violence Wednesday also hit the central city of Palmyra, where a pair of suicide car bombs exploded. Activists said the bombings targeted a military intelligence compound in that city, killing at least 12 Syrian security personnel.

State media described the explosions differently, saying they went off in a residential area and killed several people.

The United Nations says more than 60,000 people have died since the Syrian conflict began in March of 2011.
