Haley slams UN over Syrian ceasefire

Orient News, March 28, 2018 – The US ambassador to the UN, Nikki Haley, told the Security Council in New York that Tuesday (March 28) “should be a day of shame” for the organization after a 30-day ceasefire elapsed as Assad regime and Russia continued their assault in south Syria’s opposition held enclave.

Haley blamed Security Council for lack of responsibility towards the Syrian people, condemning Assad regime, Russia and Iran after launching assault to seize eastern Ghouta the same day UN announced a ceasefire in the area.

“History will not be kind when it judges the effectiveness of this council in relieving the suffering of the Syrian people,” Haley said, calling for the council to pass a new resolution expressing outrage over the failure to implement a 30-day ceasefire in eastern Ghouta.
“After years of enduring siege and starvation, residents are surrendering eastern Ghouta,” she went on, referring to the 1,700 people who “died on our watch” in eastern Ghouta since the 15-member council unanimously adopted a ceasefire resolution on February 24 following negotiations with Russia. The Assad regime had “made a mockery” of the ceasefire, she added.

Haley also accused Moscow of using its veto on the Security Council to stop effective implementation of the resolution, as she accused the Assad regime of impeding humanitarian air convoys and removing medical items from them.
