Greeks unprecedented NO vote gives a new mandate to the Prime Minister

Greece is waking up to an uncertain financial future after voters overwhelmingly rejected the latest offer for bailout. Thousands of people celebrated in Athens’s Central Sq. overnight waving flags and setting off fire crackers. The NO vote is unprecedented for a Eurozone country and it could send Greece on an exit path. %61 of the voters rejected the deal and the austerity measures tide to it. Opinion polls predicted much closer outcome. The Greek Prime Minister said the voters send him back to the negotiating table with a mandate.

Alexix Tsipras said in a speech after the announcement of the result: … You have taken a very brave decision and I am fully aware that the mandate you gave me is not a matter to fall out with you, but to strengthening my hand in order to achieve a viable solution.

Meanwhile, the Eurogroup President issued a statement saying “this result is very regrettable for the future of Greece. For recovery of the Greek economy, difficult measures and reforms are inevitable. We will now wait for the initiatives of the Greek authorities. The Eurogroup will discuss the state of play on Tuesday 7 July.”
The German Chancellor and the French president are meeting in Paris on Monday afternoon ahead of Tuesday’s meeting of the Eurozone leaders.

Meanwhile, the Greece finance minister, Yanis Varoufakis is resigning. He wrote in a block post “I was made aware of certain preference by some Eurogroup participants for my absence from its meeting.” saying the Eurogroup wanted him to resign. It is said that his resignation could actually help Prime Minister Alexis Tsipras reach an agreement with the creditors.
