Governor Christie’s conversation with Elie Wiesel

In a meeting with Elie Wiesel, the world’s most well-known holocaust survivor, New Jersey Governor Christie and a number of other US officials including Sen. Cory Booker, US Ambassador to the UN, Samantha Power and Sen. Ted Cruz, the Governor asked the Nobel Peace Laureate about Iran and America’s nuclear deal. Wiesel responded that it made America appear weak, a supplicant prepared to capitulate to Iranian demands and allow them a nuclear infrastructure.
The governor agreed and cited a speech he had given recently that emphasized that point. Christie then spoke about the world’s hotspots including Syria, Iraq, Iran and Yemen. Elie Wiesel replied an American withdrawal from the world stage had left a vacuum of leadership.
Elie Wiesel was asked how does one project strength, while also respecting its limits? And Mr. Wiesel said: Strength must be projected to establish order. It must be held in reserve at other times. Wiesel said create a circle of intellectuals, wise and learned men and women, people with whom you could be completely candid. “Meet with them regularly. Let them bring the benefit of scholarship to your endeavors.”
Asked how public leaders should generally take responsibility for error. Wiesel said the issue was so important to him and he would support such position when it comes to accept responsibility for mistakes.
