Giuliani shares stories of 9/11 at Fargo event

FARGO – Former New York City mayor and one-time Republican presidential hopeful Rudy Giuliani shared leadership tips with a Fargo audience Wednesday while taking political aim at President Barack Obama.

Speaking at the sixth annual “Voices of Vision” event hosted by the Fargo Moorhead West Fargo Chamber of Commerce, Giuliani outlined six qualities he believes a good leader should possess, starting with the importance of strategic planning.
He said having a strategy helped him reduce crime in New York City while creating an environment where businesses could grow and flourish.
Giuliani was mayor of New York during the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks and said the city and state responses to the tragedy were viewed by some as textbook examples of how to deal with crisis.
He stressed that good leadership includes helping people look beyond the immediate pain of a disaster, even one on the scale of 9/11.
“You have to always find a way out of the problem,” Giuliani said, adding that other hallmarks of leadership include working hard, gathering capable people around you and having the ability to motivate people to action.
Taking aim at Democrats, he said he doesn’t think President Obama has many of the requisite leadership qualities he outlined.
To underscore his point, Giuliani said he believes the worst quality a leader can display is arrogance and that arrogance is something the current president has in abundance.
He said their handling of Russian President Vladimir Putin highlights their arrogance because it shows “they haven’t read history.”
On global affairs, Giuliani said the United States has not done enough to challenge what he views are expansionist moves by Russia, and he said the recent agreement with Iran does nothing to stop that country’s push to develop a nuclear arsenal.
He hinted that if he had his druthers, steps would have been taken long ago to ensure Iran doesn’t get the bomb.
“I don’t mind being the policeman of the world. If we don’t do it, somebody else moves in.”
