French parliamentary committees protest Iran’s foreign minister meeting UNESCO chief

INTV, 7 Nov 2013 – French Parliamentary Committees for a Democratic Iran, consisting of MPs from all political groups in the French National Assembly and numerous French dignitaries, issued separate letters to the UNESCO Director General Irina Bokova expressing their concerns on the visit by mullahs’ foreign minister Mohammad Javad Zarif to UNESCO.
In these letters it is reiterated that on 29 October 2013 these committees held a conference in the Victor Hugo Hall discussing the latest developments of the past three months since Rouhani has come to power. The result was a horrific record of human rights violations and internal crackdown. Furthermore, the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights in Iran reminded in his report that no change has taken place under the government of Hassan Rouhani.
Therefore, these committees warned of shows staged by the senior officials of this government, saying the only goal is to derail the focus of the international community. This is the most fundamental human rights violation in a country that has a rich culture and it is unacceptable. Accepting the representative of Iran’s regime and the foreign minister in the UNESCO building darkens the image of this entity and is an insult to the culture of the Iranian people, they said, adding the Director General must explain the international community’s protests to Iran.
