Facing a slew of migrant crises Germany and France have agreed that the European Union, should impose binding quotas on the numbers member states take in, AFP cited German Chancellor Angela Merkel saying on Thursday, September 3rd.
“I spoke this morning with the French president, and the French-German position, which will transmit to the European institutions, is that we agree that … we need binding quotas within the European Union to share the burden.
That is the principle of solidarity,” Merkel told reporters during a visit in the Swiss capital.
Hollande released a statement on Thursday afternoon calling on the EU to take notice.
“The European Union must act in a manner that is decisive and consistent with its values,” the statement read.
“These men and women are fleeing war and persecution with their families. They need international protection.”
He added that Europe needed to protect these people as it was “their last hope”.
