The Daily Caller News, 29 April 2017 – A U.S. service member was killed Saturday near Mosul, Iraq.

The unidentified individual died from wounds from an explosive device blast near the Islamic State stronghold, according to U.S. Central Command.

Mosul, the second largest city in Iraq, was overrun by ISIS in 2014. It is the last bastion for the terrorist organization, but ISIS is losing control of the city, CNN reports. Coalition forces launched an operation in October 2016 to liberate Mosul.

The death of a U.S. service member Saturday marks the second American military fatality since the start of the operation to retake Mosul, reports the Military Times. Navy Chief Petty Officer Jason C. Finan was killed by a roadside bomb in October last year.

Several hundred U.S. military personnel are involved in the operation to free Mosul from ISIS’ brutal grip. The eastern part of the city has already been cleared, and efforts to eliminate ISIS in the western part are underway.

News of Saturday’s casualty follows reports of two U.S. deaths in the fight against ISIS in Afghanistan earlier this week.
